Is it an excuse if it's true?

I'm sick.  I slept thru the 4th of July.  I took it easy the 5th of July.  I'm going to Six Flags on the 6th of July.  ::cough cough::  My parental unit is incoming so I have to spend the next 2 days shining the apartment.  I plan on getting some biking in on Sunday and Monday...

6 miles later...

Good Afternoon Faithful Readers!  I got an early start on the day because I wanted to get my ride in before the high temperatures set in this afternoon.  I was down on the Greenway around 10am and rode about 6 miles on the Valley Park and Simpson Lake legs of the Meramec Greenway.  Lots of jet black dragonflies accompanying me.  Tomorrow is the FOURTH OF JULY so I put my American Flag, State of Missouri Flag, and City of St. Louis Flag in my bike's flag holders and flew them proudly.  I am such a nerd...

Here is a joke for you:

Q:  WHEN IS A BICYCLE NOT A BICYCLE?

A:  WHEN IT TURNS INTO A DRIVEWAY...

TUESDAY'S GRAY...

It is pouring rain outside, the dusty mud on the Greenway is dusty no longer...

Here are the lyrics to a song to tide you over...

IT'S FRIDAY I'M IN LOVE
by THE CURE

I don't care if Monday's blue
Tuesday's gray and Wednesday too
Thursday I don't care about you
It's Friday, I'm in love

Monday you can fall apart
Tuesday, Wednesday break my heart
Oh, Thursday doesn't even start
It's Friday I'm in love

Saturday, wait
And Sunday always comes too late
But Friday, never hesitate...

I don't care if Mondays black
Tuesday, Wednesday - heart attack
Thursday, never looking back
It's Friday, I'm in love

Monday, you can hold your head
Tuesday, Wednesday stay in bed
Or Thursday - watch the walls instead
It's Friday, I'm in love

Saturday, wait
And Sunday always comes too late
But Friday, never hesitate...

Dressed up to the eyes
It's a wonderful surprise
To see your shoes and your spirits rise
Throwing out your frown
And just smiling at the sound
And as sleek as a sheik
Spinning round and round
Always take a big bite
It's such a gorgeous sight
To see you eat in the middle of the night
You can never get enough
Enough of this stuff
It's Friday, I'm in love

I don't care if Monday's blue
Tuesday's gray and Wednesday too
Thursday I don't care about you
It's Friday, I'm in love

Monday you can fall apart
Tuesday, Wednesday break my heart
Thursday doesn't even start
It's Friday I'm in love

A little stretch of the legs...

Today I am restarting my bicycle riding.  I haven't ridden RAMBLER in about a month and a half.  The Greenway has been flooded and I have been lazy.  Today I discovered that the Greenway bike trail had been cleared of mud so I quit being lazy & rode the "Ft. Riley" and Simpson Lake sections of the Greenway for approximately 6 miles.  My Brother Mark gave me an exercise computer that you wear on your wrist and his old video camera that you mount on your handlebars.  I am going to use them to document my rides.  I will include pictures of the scenery I pass during my bike rides and daily observations.  Which brings me to today's ride:

When I'm worried about the condition of the bike trail I usually drive along the road that borders the trail and look to see if there is any standing water covering the asphalt bike path.  Driving past I thought I saw some water on a low part near the Meramec River closer to the parking lot that sits in the middle of the three legs of the Meramec Greenway (actually just deep shadows).  So I drove to the parking lot at the end of the leg of the Greenway that reminds me of Ft. Riley.  Park DEERSLAYER.  There is pocket fuzz in the headphone jack slot on my phone so I don't get to listen to my play list as I bike.  Sad face.  Put air in RAMBLER'S tires, cock my pork pie at a jaunty angle and awaaaay we go!  Today could be really hot, but all the rainy weather just has it overcast and at a really nice temperature in the 70's.  I haven't exercised in a while so I take it easy and I do not break any land speed records (hence the name of my bike).  I bike along carefully making sure that I don't slip on the dried mud that the City of Valley Park has scrapped off of the trail.
::STANDING OVATION FOR THE CITY OF VALLEY PARK::

Toodle Toodle Toodle Toddle Toddle Toddle   As I approach the part of the bike path near the Veteran's Club I notice a deer standing in the middle of the bike path.  Hello MR. Deer.  RingRingRingRingRing my bike bell.  MR. Deer doesn't move.  HonkHonkHonkHonkHonk my tank horn.  MR. Deer doesn't move.  RingRingRingRingRing my bike bell.  MR. Deer doesn't move.  Grinning I shout "Counting Coup!"* and I stand up on my pedals and rush at the stationary deer.  As I barrel towards the deer standing in the middle of the bike path, MRS. Deer jumps into the deeper woods between the bike path and Meramec River.  Her FAWN (that I did NOT notice) runs through the shallower woods between the bike path and the road.  I'm an idiot.  I lose sight of the baby deer as it clears the woods and approaches the road that runs parallel to the bike trail.  HonkHonk from one car.  HONKHONKHONK from another car.  I cringe.  No screeching brakes.  No pitiful cry from a dying FAWN.  I'm still worried though.  I continue along feeling like I'm lower than the underside of my tennis shoe.  I make it all the way to the parking lot in the middle of the three legs of the Meramec Greenway trails without having to cross vast plains of wet mud or cross questionable spans of water covering the trail.  YAY!  Feeling pretty good for not having biked in quite a while I turn and cross the road and head out on the Simpson's Lake section of the Greenway.  It's a beautiful day for a bike ride.  With only a minor slowing of the pedaling while climbing the slight rise along Simpson Lake I reach the boat ramp, turn around and head back.  Cross the road and turn left back down my favorite part of the bike ride.  In a part of the trail covered by trees I notice a five-lined ground squirrel scampering across the trail.  Scamper-Scamper-Scamper.  Look at me, I'm a chipmunk and I don't notice 6'2" 255lb men on cruiser bicycles riding towards me!  THE VOICE OF GOD says "Hello Chippy!"  Chipmunks freak out when you talk to them when you are less than 3 feet away and they aren't paying attention.  Chippy panics and runs into the weeds next to the bike path, changes his mind and runs back onto the bike trail, re-panics as he realizes that he is right next to a large FAST predator, tries to outrun the predator, re-re-panics as he realizes he cannot outrun the large FAST predator, and darts back into the weeds next to the Greenway bike trail.  I am batting 1000 today.  David: 3.  Innocent animals: 0.  As I near the end of my ride I pass a couple walking the trail and the girl says, "Nice Hat".  Cock my pork pie at a jaunty angle.  Yes, yes it is...

Post Script:  I checked to make sure the FAWN didn't get hit by a car.  No dead baby deer.
